A solar cell, also known as a photovoltaic cell, is a device that converts sunlight into electrical energy. When these two materials come into contact, an electric field is formed at the junction, which is a PN junction. When sunlight hits the cell, the photons excite the electrons, giving them enough energy to cross the PN junction, thereby generating an electric current.

 

The working principle of solar cells is based on the photoelectric effect. When sunlight strikes a semiconductor material, the energy of the photon is absorbed by the electrons, causing the electrons to jump from the valence band to the conduction band, forming free electrons and holes. Under the action of the internal electric field, these free electrons move toward the N-type semiconductor, while the holes move toward the P-type semiconductor, thereby generating current.

 

An important feature of solar cells is their cleanliness and reproducibility. Compared with traditional fossil fuels, solar cells do not produce harmful gases during operation and have minimal impact on the environment. In addition, solar energy is an almost unlimited energy source, and like wind energy, water energy and other renewable energy sources, it is of great significance to combat global warming and climate change.

 

Advantages of solar cells include low maintenance costs, no noise pollution, modularity and scalability.
