How do data center operators choose the right battery?

How do data center operators choose the right battery?

power supply system

UPS equipment and the entire power supply system centered on it are the core part to meet the power supply quality of the data center, and the battery is one of the most important components in the entire system, and is the "last barrier" of the entire power supply system.

Among the failures of UPS systems, the reasons related to batteries account for more than 30%. At present, the data center battery technology is still dominated by valve-regulated lead-acid batteries, and according to statistics, the lead-acid batteries produced in China have accounted for 1/3 of the global production, part of which is due to the rapid growth of the UPS power supply market. As Internet+, cloud computing, and big data have become national strategies, the growth of the data center industry has been further accelerated, driving the rapid growth of data center infrastructure-related equipment.

Lead-acid batteries are still popular today because of their proven track record in reliability. They are the most economical choice for large-scale applications, with excellent performance and efficiency, low internal impedance, high tolerance to improper handling, and high procurement cost.

Lead-acid batteries use an electrolyte consisting of water and sulfuric acid, with plates consisting of sponge lead (negative electrode) and lead oxide (anode). The main lead-acid battery type is the valve-regulated lead-acid (VRLA), also known as a "sealed" or "maintenance-free" battery.

Valve-regulated lead-acid batteries (VRLA) are sealed, but have a valve that vents the gas that builds up inside to the atmosphere. Usually no direct maintenance is required and no water needs to be added, as the hydrogen gas released during charging recombines with oxygen internally to form water. There are two main types of valve-regulated lead-acid batteries (VRLA) on the market, which differ in the electrolyte mix: glass microfiber separator (AGM) batteries have the electrolyte held in a highly porous microfiber glass separator; while gel batteries have the electrolyte The gel consists of a mixture of sulfuric acid and silica.

UPS power supply usually uses AGM type sealed valve-regulated lead-acid battery (VRLA) because it has lower internal resistance, higher specific power and efficiency, lower self-discharge rate and lower procurement cost. Glass microfiber mat (AGM) batteries charge faster and can deliver high currents for short periods of time.

Flooded lead-acid batteries have plates submerged in an acidic electrolyte. Since there is no seal, the hydrogen gas produced during operation is vented directly into the environment, and its ventilation system must be more powerful than that of a sealed valve-regulated lead-acid battery (VRLA). In most cases, the battery pack is housed in a dedicated room. Flooded lead-acid batteries must be operated in an upright position and need to be topped up manually.

They have a longer life and higher reliability than sealed valve-regulated lead-acid batteries (VRLA). The battery compartment of lead-acid batteries must be kept at a reasonably constant temperature (20-25°C) to avoid shortened service life and even damage.

GEM Battery GM series data center batteries have excellent deep discharge cycle performance, are suitable for a wide range of environments, and have a long service life to provide continuous power support for your data center.
