Industrial Battery Safety and Best Practices

Industrial battery safety should be the primary concern of the field job. Anyone who replaces and maintains batteries should be aware of the potential dangers caused by batteries as well as safe handling procedures and best practices. Not only are industrial batteries heavy (in some cases a single cell weighs up to 200KGS), but they also contain sulfuric acid, making them a workplace hazard in several ways. A solid understanding of safety and best practices can improve uptime and prevent accidents.

Proper maintenance of industrial batteries can significantly increase their lifespan. This is a money saver because these batteries don't come cheap. Take care of your equipment and take care of your wallet at the same time.

Taking care of industrial batteries is not only necessary to maintain the condition of equipment, but also to ensure workplace safety. Either way, regular maintenance can increase the efficiency of your equipment now and save you trouble later.

Adopt these 10 simple habits to extend the life of your industrial batteries and keep your workplace safe.

01

Always wear protective glasses and gloves. Always wear appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE) when performing battery maintenance. This can include, but is not limited to, gloves, face shields and aprons. In case of contact with eyes, flush with water for 15 minutes and seek medical attention immediately.

02

Eliminate sources of sparks or flames. When charging a lead-acid battery, the electrolyte produces hydrogen and oxygen. When performing maintenance on lead-acid batteries, sparks or flames can ignite these gases and may cause the battery to explode.

03

Keep metal tools and jewelry away from batteries. Uninsulated tools or jewelry may cause arcing if accidental contact occurs between the battery terminals and the grounded frame or other terminals. Also, gold or silver jewelry can get very hot if touched. Always wear gloves and use insulated tools to remove terminals and battery retainers.

04

Be careful when removing lead-acid batteries. Lead-acid batteries are heavy and many accidental injuries can occur when lifting or moving the battery by hand. Use the battery bay or make sure you have a firm grip on the battery and enough strength to hold it securely.

05

Keep neutralizing solution nearby. Baking soda and water solutions neutralize sulfuric acid in the battery electrolyte. Create a small solution in a jar or container and keep it nearby. If you accidentally spill some electrolyte, you can immediately clean the area with the solution, then rinse with water.

06

Follow the recommended charging practices for your battery technology. Not all battery chargers are the same or work well on submerged lead acid batteries. See the manufacturer's recommendations on how to properly charge your battery, and make sure your charger provides the best algorithm to maximize battery life and power output. Battery charging should always be done in a well-ventilated area.

07

Store the battery in a cool, dry and ventilated place. If you store a large number of batteries, make sure the area is free of any heat sources, flames and sparks. Clearly post "No Smoking" and "Flammable" signs in the area.

08

Make sure the battery vent cover is fully seated. A loose or improperly installed vent cap can spill electrolyte and expose the gas inside the battery to conditions that could cause an explosion.

09

A dedicated area for battery maintenance. Prevent accidents with a dedicated battery maintenance area with proper insulated tools, protective clothing, washing stations, ventilation and ample work space.

Industrial batteries and chargers are used on site every day, and safe use is a top concern. Post a list of best practices for battery and charger use around your facility to remind people of the importance of charging and maintaining batteries for proper use and disposal. By adopting best practices, your users will reduce the risk of incidents and increase uptime and productivity.

Of course, choosing a "right" battery is very important. No matter what your battery is used for, at GEM Battery, you can always get the most suitable battery solution. Let our expert battery staffs help to choose the best battery for you.
