How To Keep A Motorcycle Battery Charged During The Winter

Maintain motorcycle battery

winter is here. For many of us, it's time to put our motorcycles away until the weather warms up. When the weather turns wet and nasty, whether your motorcycle is going to sit idle for a month or all winter, the expectation of all riders is that when the first nice day of spring arrives, you'll be out riding it. You insert the key, turn on the ignition, and just before pressing the start button, a thought pops into your mind: "I hope the battery is fully charged!" Those of us who press the start button and nothing happens Many people encounter reality on a regular basis. Jump starting or charging are both options, but will there be enough power to start the engine again? A dead battery is frustrating.

Taking care of your motorcycle battery during the winter is simple if you follow these two rules: Store the battery away from icy conditions and keep the battery charged. There is a direct relationship between a battery's state of charge and its freezing temperature. The electrolyte in the battery consists of a mixture of sulfuric acid and water. When the battery discharges, the percentage of acid to water becomes mostly water, which freezes at a higher temperature than the acid. Freezing can cause permanent damage by cracking the battery casing and bending the plates. Fully charged batteries can be stored in subfreezing temperatures (as low as -75° F) without damage. In comparison, a discharged (failed) battery will only freeze at a temperature of 27° Fahrenheit. A battery that is not connected to anything can lose one percent of its charge per day at temperatures of 70° F, and even more as ambient temperatures drop. If the battery is installed in a motorcycle, the electronic fuel injection computer, clock, and radio will drain the battery at a higher rate, even if the ignition is turned off. Conventional batteries (those with filler caps) need to be checked for state of charge once a month, while Absorbed Glass Mat (AGM) batteries (called maintenance-free) need to be checked approximately every three months. Temperatures below 60° F or above 80° F may require more frequent inspections and/or charging. To check the battery's state of charge, connect a digital voltmeter and read the voltage. If it's below 12.25 volts, the battery needs to be charged.

During the winter, it is very important to maintain your motorcycle battery as low temperatures can negatively affect battery performance. Here are some tips for maintaining your motorcycle battery:

Charging: Make sure the battery is fully charged before winter. Charge with a smart charger to ensure your battery is properly charged and avoid overcharging or undercharging.

Stay Warm: Cold temperatures can reduce battery performance, so try to park your motorcycle in a warm, dry place. If possible, remove the battery and store it indoors.

Prevent discharge: Disconnect the negative terminal of the battery to prevent natural discharge of the battery. Some motorcycles have a feature that preserves battery power to avoid discharge by staying connected.

Regular charging: If the motorcycle is parked for a long time, it is recommended to charge the battery regularly to keep it fully charged. A smart charger can be used for light charging to avoid overcharging.

Battery maintenance: Regularly check that the battery's terminals and connectors are clean and ensure they are tight. Clean away any built-up corrosion and make sure the connections are secure to ensure good current conduction.

Pay attention to battery life: If your battery ages or degrades in performance, you may want to consider replacing it with a new one. Perform a battery health check before winter and replace if necessary.
