How to choose the right UPS battery for the data center?

UPS batteries

Lead-acid batteries are popular today because of their proven track record in reliability. They are the most economical choice for large-scale applications, with excellent performance and efficiency, low internal impedance, high tolerance to improper handling, and high procurement cost. Lead-acid batteries use an electrolyte consisting of water and sulfuric acid, with plates consisting of sponge lead (negative electrode) and lead oxide (anode). The main lead-acid battery type is the valve-regulated lead-acid battery, also known as a "sealed" or "maintenance-free" battery.

VRLA batteries are sealed but have a valve that vents the gas that has built up inside to the atmosphere. Usually no direct maintenance is required and no water needs to be added, as the hydrogen gas released during charging recombines with oxygen internally to form water. There are two main types of VRLA batteries on the market, which differ in the electrolyte mix: glass microfiber separator batteries have their electrolyte held in a highly porous microfiber glass separator; while gel batteries have an electrolyte gel composed of sulfuric acid and di A mixture of silicon oxides.

UPS batteries usually use AGM type sealed valve-regulated lead-acid batteries because of their lower internal resistance, higher specific power and efficiency, lower self-discharge rate and lower procurement cost. Glass microfiber separator batteries charge faster and can deliver high currents for short periods of time.

The plates of a flooded lead-acid battery are submerged in an acidic electrolyte. Since there is no seal, the hydrogen gas produced during operation is vented directly into the environment, and its ventilation system must be more powerful than that of a sealed valve-regulated lead-acid battery. In most cases, UPS battery packs are housed in dedicated rooms. Flooded lead-acid batteries must be operated in an upright position and need to be topped up manually.

They have a longer service life and higher reliability than sealed VRLA batteries. The battery compartment of a lead-acid battery must be maintained at a reasonably constant temperature to avoid shortened service life or even damage.

The operation of data centers requires state-of-the-art batteries and battery technology as a backup system in case the main power source is disrupted. GEM Battery GM series data center backup batteries calmly deal with various power outages and protect your equipment and data.
