How many years does a motorcycle battery generally last?

motorcycle batteries

If you insist on using the following methods to maintain motorcycle batteries, the battery life can be extended to five or six years.

The maintenance methods of motorcycle batteries are as follows:

1) Inspection and replenishment of battery fluid level

The motorcycle battery fluid level must be between the upper and lower limits, and must not be lower than the lower limit. If it is lower than the lower limit, it must be replenished in time. When replenishing, do not inject dilute sulfuric acid, otherwise the battery will be damaged due to excessive electrolyte concentration. Not to mention tap water, river water, etc. cannot be added. Because it contains calcium, magnesium and other ions and impurities.

During charging, these substances are adsorbed on the surface of the plates due to ionization and damage the battery. Therefore, you must add pure water, distilled water or the popular red battery replenishing fluid on the market (the effect is good after actual use). The motorcycle battery fluid level should be checked regularly, usually once a month and replenished. In summer, when the temperature is high, it is recommended to check and replenish it every half a month. It should be noted that sealed maintenance-free batteries do not require liquid level inspection and replenishment, and never open the sealing cover.

2) Battery status check before charging

Check whether the motorcycle battery voltage is lower than the standard value, and if possible, check whether the specific gravity of the electrolyte is lower than 1.28 (20°C). Observe the inside of the battery. If one or several battery cells are corroded, the plates turn white, or there is accumulation of material at the bottom, or the plates are warped, the battery should be replaced. If the battery terminals are dirty, corroded or oxidized, they can be cleaned with a wire brush. If it cannot be cleaned, you can drop a little electrolyte to corrode the surface and then wipe it dry with clean water.

3) Charging the battery

This is an important part of motorcycle battery maintenance, which directly affects the life of the battery. When charging, the current should not be too high, and it is recommended not to use fast charging. When charging, please use half the rated charging current and double the rated charging time. When charging, put the battery into cold water to cool down (the water is submerged to 4/5 of the battery). Because the battery emits a lot of heat when charging, if the heat is not dissipated as much as possible, the plates will bend and deform, causing damage to the battery. When charging, unsealed batteries should have their plugs opened and the battery should be charged in a well-ventilated place away from fire to prevent accidents caused by hydrogen gas generated during charging.

4) Detection after charging the battery

After charging the battery, do not rush to test it. Check it after letting it sit for 30 minutes. Otherwise, the battery status cannot be accurately reflected. First check and correct the liquid level, and then use a multimeter (preferably a digital multimeter) to measure its voltage. A 12 volt (6 volt) battery should be at or above 12.8 volt (6.4 volt).

If it is lower than 12.7 volts (6.3 volts), you still need to continue charging. If it is below 12 volts (6 volts), the battery is damaged and should be replaced. It must be noted that short-circuit ignition is not allowed to determine the size of the current. You can use a headlight bulb with the same rated voltage as the battery to connect it to the battery. Light it up for 5 minutes and observe the light. If the light dims or goes out obviously, Indicates that the battery is damaged and should be replaced.

In addition, the choice of charger is also very important. Chargers include variable voltage (current) type, constant voltage type, constant current type, etc. It is best not to use a homemade charger. It is best to use a dedicated charger for sealed maintenance-free batteries. However, it should be noted that some constant voltage and constant current chargers cannot charge sealed maintenance-free batteries.

A device that converts chemical energy into electrical energy is called a chemical battery, generally referred to as a battery. After discharge, the internal active material can be regenerated by charging - storing electrical energy as chemical energy; when it is necessary to discharge, the chemical energy can be converted into electrical energy again. This type of battery is called a storage battery (Storage Battery), also called a secondary battery.

The so-called battery is an electrochemical device that stores chemical energy and releases electrical energy when necessary.

Storage Battery is a device that directly converts chemical energy into electrical energy. It is a battery designed to be rechargeable and can be recharged through a reversible chemical reaction. It usually refers to a lead-acid battery, which is a type of battery. It is a secondary battery. Its working principle: when charging, it uses external electrical energy to regenerate the internal active materials, stores the electrical energy as chemical energy, and converts the chemical energy into electrical energy again when it needs to be discharged, such as mobile phone batteries commonly used in daily life.

It uses a lead-based grid filled with sponge lead (also called a grid) as the negative electrode, a lead-based grid filled with lead dioxide as the positive electrode, and dilute sulfuric acid with a density of 1.26--1.33g/mlg/ml as the electrolyte. When the battery is discharging, metallic lead is the negative electrode and undergoes an oxidation reaction to produce lead sulfate; lead dioxide is the positive electrode and undergoes a reduction reaction to produce lead sulfate. When the battery is charged with direct current, elemental lead and lead dioxide are produced at the two poles respectively. After the power source is removed, it returns to its pre-discharge state, forming a chemical battery. Lead-acid batteries can be charged and discharged repeatedly. Its cell voltage is 2V. A battery is a battery pack composed of one or more cells, referred to as a battery. The most common one is 6V. Others include 2V, 4V, 8V, and 24V batteries. . For example, the battery used in a car (commonly known as a battery) is a 12V battery pack consisting of six lead-acid batteries connected in series.
