Difference Between AGM and Gel Batteries

Difference Between AGM and Gel Batteries

2022-09-15

The size and design of battery-based renewable energy storage systems, the ESS, varies by installation purpose and the location. In order to choose the right battery for your system, it is important to understand the key differences between deep cycle AGM battery and gel batteries. In this article, we will discuss the essential differences between GEM Battery's battery technologies, focusing on the use of deep cycle batteries in renewable energy storage storage applications, how do they work, their features and advantages.

The GEM Battery deep cycle AGM battery utilizes a porous glass mat separator that is able to absorb a large amount of electrolyte while still allowing some of the pores to be filled. These air holes act as channels, allowing oxygen to move from the positive plate to the negative plate. This absorbent glass mat is a key component of the battery, as it must have high compressibility in order to maintain good contact between the separator and the plates. It must also have high permeability and porosity.

Here are some advantages of using AGM batteries:

▶ Cheaper than deep cycle gel batteries.

▶ Wider temperature range than deep cycle gel batteries.

▶ The slowest self-discharge rate AGM and gel batteries.

▶ Best shock/vibration resistant AGM and gel batteries.

▶ Best AGM and gel batteries for high power applications.

▶ AGM batteries are by nature, safer for the environment, and safer to use.

Here are some of the disadvantages of using AGM batteries:

▶ Not as good as gel batteries for systems that require periodic deep discharge. (ie 80% DOD)

▶ In low power applications, the performance is not as good as deep cycle gel batteries.

GEM Battery deep cycle Gel batteries are also based on the same principle of oxygen recombination, but use a different method to achieve it. They use a composite separator made of glass mats combined with porous polyethylene or PVC sheets. The battery is filled with a thixotropic silicone gel mixed with sulfuric acid. When it's added to the battery, it fills up all the space available and then forms a solid matrix.

Here are some of the advantages of using deep cycle Gel batteries:

▶ Outperforms deep cycle AGM batteries for systems that require periodic deep discharge. (ie 80% DOD)

▶ Outperforms deep cycle AGM batteries in low power applications.

▶ Discharge significantly less hydrogen gas.

▶ Can be used or positioned in any orientation.

Here are some of the disadvantages of using deep cycle Gel batteries:

▶ More expensive than AGM batteries.

▶ In low temperature conditions, the performance is not as good as AGM batteries. (< 40 degrees Fahrenheit)

GEM Battery GS, GM, GF, GL and some GDC series are AGM batteries.

GEM Battery GzS, GzV, GPG and some GDC series are Gel batteries.
