An emergency light  is a lighting fixture that illuminates critical safety areas when a building loses power. During these power losses, equipment with battery backup capability switches to emergency operation, lighting escape routes and safety equipment. All emergency lights and illuminated emergency exit signs use batteries to power the lights. To ensure continuous readiness and operation of the emergency lights, these batteries are rechargeable. Circuitry within the emergency light both charges the battery and ensures that it remains charged.
